Happy 1st birthday to UCT Online High School

The first day of school

At the start of the new academic year, UCT Online High School welcomed more than 5000 learners spanning numerous different backgrounds. We’re a school that’s accomplished a lot of ‘firsts’, starting with being a first of its kind. The launch of the University of Cape Town’s online high school became the first university on the African continent to cross over to the secondary schooling market through an innovative online model of learning.

UCT Online High School owns the future

What’s a school without an official school song? We brought together some of South Africa’s finest voices to create our school’s anthem. We Own The Future', named by our learners, was released on January 24th — coinciding with International Day of Education. The track honours the young people of today, inspiring and reminding them that they are the future. As well as, UCT Online High School being in the driving seat of the future of learning. Our anthem even hit the stage at this year’s Huawei KDay, hosted by local radio station, KFM. Watch our amazing stars GoodLuck, Shekhinah, YoungstaCPT and Msaki perform We Own The Future live at KDay here or watch our official school song music video here

From virtual gatherings to in-person events

We got to head out of the virtual classrooms in celebration of Youth Day. UCT Online High School, in collaboration with Grade Africa, hosted our first-ever Youth Day event in Battery Park in Cape Town. YoungstaCPT, Uncle Vinny and KashCPT were all in attendance to keep everyone entertained. Some of our own even stepped up as guest speakers on a panel, discussing the importance of education. We also headed to Jo’burg to celebrate World Gaming Day with our learners, where we had a fun-filled afternoon packed with all their favourite video games.

Our spin on a school uniform

We’re a no-uniform school, but we still like to show some school pride. UCT Online High School teamed up with South Africa’s dopest streetwear brand, Grade Africa, to create the dopest line of UCT Online High School merch no other school has ever seen. The collection consisted of hoodies, tees, beanies and bags and it’s still available for you to shop at our online store. It’s so unique that it made it onto the Global Citizen’s Rewards platform across Africa — now that’s cool!

What’s next?

At UCT Online High School, we’re constantly striving to be and do better when it comes to education. From 2023, we’ll be expanding our offerings by giving learners the choice of two curriculums; South African National Senior Certificate (CAPS) and Cambridge International. We will also be opening our doors to those who want a second chance at an education with our Adult Matric curriculum. Our platform is growing and changing and accommodating new communities. We welcome you to join us at our fast-growing school, by applying here. For even more updates, make sure you’re keeping an eye on our website and keeping up with us on all of our socials.
